A census-based housing vulnerability index for typhoon hazards in the Philippines

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction recognises housing as an important element of vulnerability, however, there remains limited understanding how sub-national vulnerability varies spatially. This research sought to develop a municipal-level index typhoon hazards, applied at national scale in the Philippines. We first selected 25 indicators from 2015 Philippines census, which were reduced into seven underlying dimensions typhoon-related using principal component analysis: density, quality, crowdedness, tenure security, extreme substandard housing, drinking water source, and structural integrity. These components then aggregated create relative index. spatial clustering analysis test patterns, finding increasing north south, with nuance municipalities that defy these trends. Our results offer more granular view may assist unpacking localised conditions contribute disaster risk researchers government agencies targeting interventions.
